Pony hair leather is calfskin tanned with the hair left on. The hair is short and glossy, and it looks like a young pony's coat, which is where the name comes from. Because it holds print so well, it is the classic choice for animal prints on bags, shoes and belts. It also works for small details and interior pieces.

This guide is for leather goods makers, shoemakers, designers and brands. It covers how to recognise pony hair, the main prints and finishes, where it works best and where it falls short. It also explains how to work with it and care for it, and what you will find among Zerow's deadstock leathers.

What is pony hair?

Standard tanning removes the hair. With pony hair, the skin is tanned so the hair stays soft and dense. The surface feels velvety and has a clear direction. Stroked one way it is smooth. Stroked the other way it feels rougher and looks duller.

It is also sold as calf hair or hair-on hide. Most skins are around one millimetre thick. That makes pony hair a better fit for leather goods and footwear than for clothing.

Prints and finishes

Short, dense hair holds colour and pattern well. That is why calf hair has long been the standard base for animal prints.

What it is used for

Leather goods are its natural home. It is used for whole bags and clutches, or for panels and flaps. In footwear it appears on pumps, loafers, sneakers and ankle boots. It also suits belts and small leather goods, and details such as collars, pockets and trims. In interiors you will find it on cushions, seating and decorative upholstery.

Pony hair or shearling?

Both materials have hair, but they behave very differently. Shearling is sheepskin with its wool, so it is thick and warm. Pony hair is calfskin with short, flat hair, so it insulates very little. Choose shearling for warmth and pony hair for its look. Our guide to shearling has the full comparison.

Working with it and care

  • Cut from the back with a knife so the hair stays intact. Check that the hair runs the same way on every piece.
  • Use leather needles and a fairly open stitch, because every hole stays visible.
  • Keep glue and heavy pressure away from the hair side, as they flatten it.
  • For care, brush gently in the direction of the hair and wipe with a dry cloth. Avoid water and products made for smooth leather.
  • Store finished pieces in fabric dust bags, away from friction and direct light.

Where to buy deadstock calf hair

Zerow sells deadstock leathers. These are surplus and end-of-run skins from Italian luxury houses and tanneries, so no new production is needed. Quantities are limited and prints are rarely repeated. Once a skin is sold, that variant may not come back.

Leathers are sold by the skin, so you choose how many skins you need. Each product page shows the average m² per skin, the thickness and the other specifications. Businesses with a VAT number have dedicated terms. Samples are available to everyone.

Pony hair leather: frequently asked questions

Does pony hair come from horses?

Usually not. It is calfskin tanned with the hair left on. The name comes from the hair, which looks like a pony's coat.

What is the difference between pony hair and shearling?

Pony hair is calfskin with short, glossy hair and is used for accessories and details. Shearling is sheepskin with its wool, and it is used for warm outerwear and linings.

Does pony hair shed?

The hair wears down with constant friction, mostly on handles, corners and toe caps. That is why designers often use it for panels and details, with smooth leather where wear is heaviest.

How do you clean calf hair?

Brush it gently in the direction of the hair and wipe it with a dry cloth. Avoid water and smooth-leather products. For serious stains, go to a specialist cleaner.

How thick is calf hair?

Most skins are around one millimetre. The exact thickness is listed on each product page.

Can I order a sample before buying?

Yes. Samples are available to all Zerow customers, private and business, and that includes leathers. A sample is the best way to judge the hair, colour and print in person.
